5 things to discover at Health Innovation Week 2019

March 20, 2019 By: Veronica Sheppard

The sixth annual Health Innovation Week is coming to Toronto on April 1, and it’s the biggest one yet. This year, attendees will have 30+ events to explore and a range of topics to discover, from the commercialization of cannabis to AI and drug discovery. Below are some of the key things to check out during the week, both at MaRS and around the GTA.

The 6th Annual Health Innovation Week: Where Health Means Business - April 1-5, 2019

1. Learn how technology can help an aging population

How is Canada prepared to care for an aging population? Modern advancements in tech are providing the healthcare community with innovative and new ways to approach persisting issues such as brain health, mobility and housing.

At MaRS HealthKick Focus: The Intersection of Innovation and Aging, fireside chats and keynotes will address trends in care, gaps in the system and the future of mobility.

Tickets are free — make sure to save your seat while you can.

2. Make sense of an unpredictable future

Healthcare entrepreneur, professor, advisor and thought leader Dr. Gautam Gulati will be one of the key speakers at this year’s Health Innovation Week, taking centre stage at HealthKick Adopt. As a go-to expert on health trends in North America, “Dr. G” looks to inspire creativity in organizations and encourages the adoption of innovative practices.

We spoke to Dr. G about his upcoming talk at HealthKick Adopt, where he will do a deep dive into actionable principles and techniques for creative companies to take away and apply to their teams to develop better solutions.

“Healthcare as an industry is on an inverse path from great to good,” says Dr. G. As companies struggle to keep pace with rapid technology changes, they tend to adopt a competitive mindset instead of a creative one, which Dr. G says stands in the path of progress.

“Innovation itself won’t create change, it’s people who create change.”

At HealthKick Adopt, you can explore the latest trends in how health systems are accelerating the adoption of innovative technologies and solutions. Meet decision-makers and health ecosystem members as we kick off the week.

3. Find an investor for your idea

Take the opportunity to introduce yourself – and your ideas – to more than 300+ investors collectively worth billions at HealthKick Invest on April 2-3. Representatives from firms such as Morgan Stanley, TELUS Ventures, Johnson & Johnson Innovation and more will be onsite and ready to hear about innovative ideas in the health space.

This two-day event features panels on both investing and funding, with a keynote talk by Paul Desmarais III, chairman and CEO of Sagard Holdings, and senior vice-president of both Power Corporation of Canada and Power Financial Corporation.

4. Connect with global markets at MaRS

Every year, Health Innovation Week brings in international delegations and trade commissioners from many fields and areas of expertise. Here are just some of the confirmed trade commissioners so far:

• Christopher Loan (Beijing)
• Edouard Huot (Berlin)
• Christine Sarkisian (Boston)
• Stanley Gomes (Tel Aviv)
• Alexia Jablonski (Lagos)

Learn about the adoption of healthcare internationally, build your network and gain perspectives outside of the Canadian market.

5. Get the latest on taking cannabis to market

The clinical use of cannabis is an accepted part of Canadian medical practice, but its legalization for recreational use raises questions that have yet to be answered. On April 4, join us for a free afternoon of keynotes, panels and lightning talks about commercialization and applications of cannabis in modern life.

Taking part in the talks will be experts from companies such as The GrowthOp, Strainprint, Vapium and more. Free registration is still open here.
